LSS Foreign Film Collection Continues to Grow

July 3, 2009 by Mary Prochniak

Each year the UW-Madison campus and Van Hise Hall host several summer language learning programs. L&S Learning Support Services has received a grant from the Friends of UW-Madison Libraries to purchase contemporary films in support of these programs:

•    Arabic and Persian Immersion Program
•    BALSSI (Baltic Studies Summer Institute, including Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian)
•    SASLI (South Asian Summer Language Institute)
•    SEASSI (Southeast Asian Summer Studies Institute)

The films are in DVD format and can be checked out for three days to anyone with a UW-Madison ID. The collection is located in the Learning Lab, 259 Van Hise Hall. Summer hours are Monday-Friday, 10 am to 4 pm through August 7. See the Hours page for more hours.

See the Library Collection webpage for more information, or stop by and browse!

University Communications' recent launch of iTunesU for UW-Madison offers a great new platform for instructors to share instructional media with their students as well as with a wide audience outside the walls of campus classrooms.

Securing your Laptop from Theft

April 15, 2009 by Sara Ziemendorf

There has been recent publicity regarding the surge in laptop thefts campus wide.   UW Police reports that the most thefts are not involving students, but staff.  It’s very easy for thieves to walk into open offices or unattended classrooms and take what they’d like.   That can easily be your laptop as well as your wallet.

UW Police says that there has been a 300% increase in laptop thefts over the previous year.  The FBI is anticipating a 48% increase in laptop theft this year alone.
