In addition to a complete range of audiovisual equipment, available
through the Van Hise AV Pool (275 Van Hise), LSS also has other
AV equipment and services for use by L&S departments. Contact
Doug Worsham (262-4965) for more information
about AV equipment and services. In addition, several classrooms
in Van Hise already have equipment in them (see
AV Classrooms).
AUDIOVISUAL EQUIPMENT POOL
A collection of audiovisual equipment is available without charge
in 275 Van Hise. It may be used by anyone teaching in Van Hise Hall.
Some portable equipment is also available for use in other buildings.
To reserve equipment or receive instruction on its use contact the
AV/Media Services desk in 275 Van Hise (262-1678) or Doug Worsham (262-4965). Reservations can
also be made for one-time equipment use using the Web; we strongly
recommend that those wishing to do so first read the instructions. Requests
for repeating reservations can also be made on the Web, but need
to be verified by AV Pool staff and thus must be made further in
advance. All borrowers, including faculty, must be registered with
us and present a valid UW ID to use AV Equipment.
Equipment includes:
- Audio: Cassette & Open Reel Tape Recorders, CD Players,
PA System, Record Player
- Video: TV Carts (VHS, Beta, US and Foreign Standards), DVD Players,
Video Projectors, Camcorders
- Projectors: Overhead (standard and portable), Opaque, Slide,
16mm Film, Video, Data

Laptops
- Other: Screen, Keys, Extension Cords, Patch Cords (connecting
cables), Portable Lectern, etc.
- Classroom Equipment: Each Van Hise classroom is equipped with
an overhead projector. Two TV carts are located on each floor
to reduce the need to use the elevators (check out a key from
the AV Pool).
If you wish to use AV materials from the LSS collection along with
this reservation, see In-Class
Use of AV Materials.
PROFESSIONAL QUALITY TAPE RECORDERS
Letters & Science faculty and graduate students may borrow
DAT digital audio recorders, or high-quality open-reel or cassette
tape recorders for professional field recordings and research. A
complete accessory package is provided. Loan periods vary from several
days to a year or longer, and advance reservations and special approvals
are required. Contact Doug Worsham (262-4965) for additional information.
SELF-SERVICE CASSETTE AND SLIDE COPYING
Audio cassette duplicators are available in the
Learning Lab (259) to make copies from cassette to cassette. Bulk
tape erasers are also available. Users must supply their own 60-minute
(only) cassettes. Copyrighted tapes may not be duplicated. Special
arrangements may also be made for self-service copying from one
open-reel tape to another open-reel tape, or from a record to a
cassette or open-reel tape. See the AV/Media Services Desk in 275
Van Hise for details.
A copy stand and camera for use in producing high-quality
slides when developing instructional materials may be used by L&S
faculty and TAs. Contact Dennis
Rinzel (263-3828) at the Video Resource Center for instruction
or more information. The Special
Projects Lab has scanners for copying slides
in a digital format. A digital camera is also available
for short term loan to capture images for electronic publishing.
Contact Lisa Jansen (262-1126)
for information or to schedule use of this equipment.
