Laptop checkout quota news

October 15, 2009 by Sue Weier

The LSS InfoLab staff has received several queries about the Checkout Quota System.  This system is in a testing phase at this time.  When you check a laptop out, a counter is updated and the lab attendant may pass that information on to you.  However, the counter is not being used to limit checkouts at this time.

Our understanding of the quota system is that it will limit each individual to 20 checkouts per semester, across all InfoLabs.  So fifteen checkouts at Memorial and five checkouts at LSS would be the limit in a single semester.  As of now, that is all that has been decided.  We expect to meet later this Fall to make decisions about when the quota will be enabled, if exceptions are allowed, what equipment is included, etc.  As soon as we know that information, we will post it on this website.  Patrons that have checked out laptops in the past will receive an email with information about the quota system.

If you feel that you'll need a laptop for more than the 20 allowed checkouts, please take a look at the rentals available from DoIT.  These laptops are available for weekly, monthly, and semester-long rentals for a reasonable fee.  For more information, take a look at the DoIT Computer & Accessory Rental page at http://support.doit.wisc.edu/showroom/page.php?id=3086.
