Foreign Language Computing

The world seems to be shrinking as people from our campus interact with those around the world. The Internet, social networking tools like Facebook or MySpace, and traditional tools like email all make international communication easy. However, each technology presents unique problems when working with foreign languages.

L&S Learning Support Services offers consulting and support on computing issues related to foreign languages.

Instructors, academic staff and faculty can contact an LSS staff member for problems related to creating or reading documents in languages other than English. We commonly work on issues such as:

  • use of unicode
  • installation of non-English keyboards
  • key combinations for non-English characters
  • availability and use of proofing tools
  • creation and display of non-English webpages
  • location of font sets and input methods for less commonly taught languages

Students can find helpful handouts on reading and creating documents with foreign languages in the InfoLab at 464 Van Hise Hall.
