LSS has recently acquired DVDs in the following languages and topics:
Arabic, South Asia, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Tamil, and General Interest (see Interdepartmental category).
The new DVDs are available for checkout in the the LSS Learning Lab, 259 Van Hise Hall. Here is a list:
Most
of LSS streamed video is in the QuickTime streaming format. If you
cannot successfully view a streamed video, try these steps:
- Did
you give it the correct ID and password if one is needed? If not, you
will probably be prompted for it again and again until you get them
right.
- Make
sure you have a wired connection and you are on campus. Wireless
internet connections probably will not work, nor will any comput
Mostly likely, the media files for your course will be set before the semester and they will not change. In this scenario, a live bookmark is not as advantageous as it would be if the course files were constantly updated. One benefit of using a live bookmark, however, is that all media files will be bookmarked (with your course as a heading) instead of solely bookmarking the course listing.

Each year the UW-Madison campus and Van Hise Hall host several summer language learning programs. L&S Learning Support Services has received a grant from the Friends of UW-Madison Libraries to purchase contemporary films in support of these programs:
• Arabic and Persian Immersion Program
• BALSSI (Baltic Studies Summer Institute, including Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian)
• SASLI (South Asian Summer Language Institute)
• SEASSI (Southeast Asian Summer Studies Institute)
The films are in DVD format and can be checked out for three days to anyone with a UW-Madison ID. The collection is located in the Learning Lab, 259 Van Hise Hall. Summer hours are Monday-Friday, 10 am to 4 pm through August 7. See the Hours page for more hours.

If a single picture is worth a thousand words, how many words might one million high-quality images you can use in PowerPoint presentations, online or printed course materials, or even scholarly publications be worth?
Fortunately, you don't have to do the math, because the UW General Library System has purchased the license for ARTstor, a "digital library of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences with a set of tools to view, present, and manage images for research and pedagogical purposes", available free to UW-Madison faculty, staff, and students.
