Video production at LSS encompasses all the myriad ways video is made for instructional purposes throughout the College of Letters and Science. Video in the classroom may vary from a clip shown to illustrate a concept to a full course delivered as an integrated mix of video lectures, multimedia slides and synchronous interaction. Whatever the case may be, the following facilities and services are available through LSS.
LSS facilities include a small video production studio capable of of up to three-camera standard definition broadcast quality productions. Van Hise room 368 has studio lighting, sound dampening and a studio backdrop that helps deliver professional and consistent results for interviews, small group performances, lectures, readings, and live productions.
LSS's Media Services Group provides a variety of video production services for classroom
student presentations, panel discussions, special lectures, cultural
events, performances, and other events both on- and off- campus.
The fees for professional or student produced MiniDV and HDV productions include labor and material costs as well
as a consultation with one of our staff members. Please give two weeks notice prior to the
taping date. Use our online Videotaping Request Form
LSS can broadcast video productions over the internet live using our Quicktime Streaming Server. The server also works well to deliver pre-recorded content to audiences in situations when the content is long in duration or when the content needs extra protection from unwanted sharing. Contact Dennis Rinzel for our fee schedule and more information at Dennis@lss.wisc.edu
Consider using the camcorders with tripods that are available in the LSS AV Pool. Of course, you need to supply your own cameraperson and videotape. To reserve equipment and receive instruction on its use, contact the AV Media Services Desk in 275 Van Hise Hall. (262-1678). All borrowers, including faculty, must be registered with LSS and present a valid UW ID to use AV equipment.
To accomodate the requirement of Graduate Teaching Assistants to provide teaching samples to their advisors, LSS provides reduced cost dubbing from MiniDV tape or Flash Media to DVD or VHS. Dubbing charges are waived and TAs are only charged $3 for the cost of the DVD.
To create a cohesive video presentation, video often needs to be edited. Historically, the film was cut apart and rejoined by hand. Today, that is no longer the case. We have software that will allow us to play video tapes or solid state media for computer capture, and then we can use digital editing tools to arrange the video. We can output the edited video onto tape, DVD, or a web ready format. Their are fees for these services, however, we do have stations for faculty and staff to do the editing themselves. If you are interested in learning more about editing video, please contact David at david@lss.wisc.edu
